I was looking for a way to password protect a folder on the Mac. I needed to be able to backup a large collection of files onto a USB hard drive and then send it securely through the mail for safe off-site storage. For some reason, this functionality is not integrated directly into Finder.
Finally I stumbled upon a way to do it with built-in OS X software. That is perfect because I wanted to avoid using random 3rd-party trialware for something that an operating system ought to be able to do for free.
How to Password Protect a Folder on the Mac:
* Open up the "Disk Utility" application
* File -> New -> Disk Image from Folder...
* choose a folder to protect
* choose "AES-128" encryption and press Save
* Enter your desired new password twice (Do not forget it.)
This process creates an ordinary Macintosh disk image (.dmg) file. The disk image contains the entire contents of the folder, but cannot be opened unless the correct password is supplied. To open it, just double-click the .dmg file in Finder. A password dialog box will appear. Once you supply your correct password, Finder will automatically unencrypt your data and mount the image as a disk.

Mac Talk - Rip & Burn DVD
Ok so I'm probably the last one of us that hasn't maximized the use of the SUPER DRIVE on my machine, but I have yet to successfully Rip & Burn a DVD.
When I first got to the Mac I was told that I could do all my ripping and burning from Leopard's Disk Utility. Uhm yea...that was decent, but a dead end.
So now I'm looking into 3rd party programs and wondering which is best? I've heard of Toast, Roxio, Popcorn, etc, etc. Which one have you guys used and is user friendly?
Also, when trying to copy and burn a movie how can you tell if the movie has some sort of encryption on it that won't allow ripping & running?
sp
ps. i just finished using Handbrake to convert a movie to .m4v to watch on the iTouch...SWEEEET!!!

The Ten Mac Commandments
ONE-TWO-THREE-FOUR-FIVE-SIX-SEVEN-EIGHT-NINE...TEN!
I been a PC for years, it made me mechanical
Only fools use that ish, I wrote me a manual
A step by step booklet for us to get
Our MacS intact, not that Windows crap
Rule Numbre Uno:
1. Freeware is not a term, it's a way of life.
2. Always protect your MAC.
With a superior machine this is, we need to make sure our MACs are in tip top condition. (YOU ARE YOUR MAC)
3. Utilize Time Machine
It may be a rare occurance, but MACs DO crash. Be prepared.
Time machine brings back the past another wonderful app thats unsurpassed in case you didnt realize thats Rule Number Three just use this program and backup regularly
4. You know you heard this before
MACBOOKS are fly but the prices too high
5. Strong words called ..... art and designin' ... strictly for MAC men .. not PC men .. if you wanna design/produce/dj or anything else productive .. tell PC hell no, cuz they gon' want they photos/beats/music and everything else productive rain, sleet, hail snow
6. A MAC OS on a PC don't mix like two d!cks and no b!tch
There is VM Fusion or Parallels just make your pick....
7.This rule is SO under rated: Use Spaces & Exposé to keep your apps & files separated.
8.Never keep MAC secrets to just you. Share round with ALL the peeps in the Black Mac Crew.
9.(Shoulda been #1 to me) If ain't because of your job, stay the f#ck away from PC's. Viruses and crashes is their main mission...be givin spyware, crazy trojans ... probably even porn subscriptions.
Rule Number 2 shoulda been number 1 to me Protect the MAC from all the haters that be.
